Most California teens follow the same order. Knowing it up front keeps you from booking lessons too early or too late.
Driver education (30 hours)
Take a DMV-approved driver education course. It can be done online. When you finish, you receive the DL 400C Certificate of Completion.
The instruction permit (15½ or older)
Book a DMV appointment for the knowledge test. Bring the DL 400C, proof of identity and residency, and a parent or guardian to sign. Pass the test and you leave with your instruction permit.
Behind-the-wheel training (6 hours)
Drivers under 18 need six hours of professional training with a licensed driving school. At Stallion that is three 2-hour lessons, with pickup in Chico or a convenient meeting point near you, confirmed when you book.
Supervised practice (50 hours)
Practice with a licensed adult for at least 50 hours, including 10 at night. Keep a simple log.
The drive test
After holding the permit for at least six months, and at 16 or older, book the DMV drive test.

If your teen hasn't finished driver ed, start with online driver education. If they have a permit, book lesson one.
