What the DMV asks: Apply at the DMV with the driver education certificate. A parent or guardian signs the application.

What the DMV asks: California requires six hours of professional behind-the-wheel training.

50 hours of practice at home
What the DMV asks: Practice with a licensed adult aged 25 or older: at least 50 hours, 10 of them at night.

The DMV road test
What the DMV asks: You can take the driving test once you have held the permit for at least six months and are between 16 and 18.

Your provisional license
What the DMV asks: The DMV sets provisional rules: no driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., and no passengers under 20 unless a licensed driver 25 or older rides with you. The DMV lists the exceptions.
