Supervised Practice: How to Make the 50 Hours Count

A simple plan for parents to turn required practice hours into real skill between lessons.

California asks for 50 hours of supervised practice, 10 of them at night. Hours alone do not make a safe driver. What you practice matters.

Start where the last lesson ended

Read the instructor notes after each lesson and practice the "needs practice" items that week.

Short, frequent drives

Three 30-minute drives beat one long weekend drive. Short sessions keep attention high.

Build in this order

Empty lots, then quiet residential streets, then busier roads, then highway and night driving.

Coach, don't grab

Give directions early and calmly. Save feedback for when the car is parked.

Log it

Note the date, time, conditions and what you practiced. It helps you see progress and spot gaps.

Check the source. Requirements can change. Confirm current rules on the California DMV website before you apply.

If your teen hasn't finished driver ed, start with online driver education. If they have a permit, book lesson one.
